A stunning performance in adverse circumstances means that STP backed racer Luke Jones is just one point away from clinching the Triumph Triple Challenge and with it a ride in the 2012 British Supersport Championship.
A serious arm injury following a fall in pre-event testing meant that Luke opted out of the opportunity of another ride on the HM Plant Superstock Honda Fireblade to focus on his championship ambitions and minimise any damage to his series lead.
Despite severe pain through the chicanes at the Cadwell Park circuit and braking downhill into Mansfield corner, Luke still managed to qualify second on the grid and the take a remarkable double race win.
The young Hereford rider took an early lead in the opening race but a slight mistake saw him slip to 5th place although he says that had its advantages. “I had to work my way back into the lead and that stopped me thinking about the pain too much”, he explained, “but in the second race I led right from the start and the race seemed to go on forever.”
Although he is quick to point out that he is taking nothing for granted, Luke now has four races in which to pick up a single point and with it the title and that coveted 2012 ride.
Meanwhile, after his disappointment at Brands Hatch, Victor Cox was be pleased to be back in the British Superstock Championship points with an 8th place finish on the Blackhorse Kawasaki ZX10R
First qualifying saw Cox uncharacteristically down in tenth place, although the Trowbridge man was just over half a second off a place in the top six. It was a similar story in the second session as Victor again finished tenth, albeit with an improvement of almost a second on his best lap time with only a second covering the top 12 riders.
So Cox lined up on the fourth row of the grid and as the riders completed their first lap he was up to seventh, 2.74s down on the leader and one second behind sixth place man Luke Quigley. Victor in turn was at the front of a three man group which also included Tristan Palmer and David Johnson.
He determinedly held on to seventh for the first four laps as Palmer and Johnson juggled positions, but on the fifth lap Palmer got ahead to demote him to eighth as Johnson began to fade with Billy Mellor now up to ninth.
Victor circulated in a safe eighth for the next couple of laps, almost a second behind Palmer who, on the eighth lap got ahead of Howie Mainwaring to move into sixth.
At this point Cox was almost a second clear in eighth with Mainwaring a similar distance ahead of him, but two laps later the gap between the two had lessened considerably as Victor began to assert some serious pressure on his rival in front. As they crossed the line at the end of Lap 11, Cox was right with Mainwaring and on the next lap he got ahead of him to move into seventh, however
Anthony Haywood's crash brought an early end to proceedings and a result was declared from the previous lap leaving Victor in eighth.
After the race Cox commented “There are three meetings left to the end of the BSB season and it's important for me and the team that I continue to put in strong performances.”
The next rounds of both the Triumph Triple Challenge and the Metzeler British Superstock Championship will be at the next BSB meeting at Doningtom Park on September 9th - 11th.
